The Mediterranean diet is not only one of the most delicious diets but it is also among the healthiest in the world; a model for the industrial world. With its emphasis on whole grains, legumes, nuts, olive oil,  fruits and vegetables, fish, and poultry; it is high in fiber, protein, healthy fats, anti-oxidants, minerals, and vitamins. Very little red meat is eaten (as a result of the lack of grazing land), and food is seasoned with plenty of herbs and spices instead of salt. Combined with a climate and lifestyle that is conducive to exercise, it is no wonder people in the Mediterranean have a higher average lifespan.
